KYC for Crypto Exchanges: What to Build Differently

The shape of the problem

Signup on a crypto platform is squeezed from two sides. On one side sits user expectation: opening an account should take minutes. On the other sits obligation: customer identification, sanctions screening and record keeping.

The way to satisfy both is to stop treating verification as a single heavy gate.

Layered verification

Instead of demanding everything in the first second, tie verification depth to what the user is actually doing:

  • Signup. Email and phone verification. The account opens and the user can see the platform.
  • First deposit / low limit. Document verification and liveness detection, proving the document is genuine and the user is live.
  • High volume / withdrawal. Address verification, source of funds and extended sanctions screening.

The commercial benefit is direct: a user does not have to clear the heaviest step before trying the platform, and you never open a risk-bearing transaction to an unverified identity.

Do not skip liveness

Crypto is one of the most heavily targeted markets for account resale. Accounts opened with someone else's identity document are later sold or rented out.

Document verification alone does not stop this — the document is genuine, it simply does not belong to the applicant. Liveness detection and face matching close the gap by proving the person on the document is the person in front of the camera.

Ongoing screening, not a one-time check

Sanctions and PEP lists are not static. A profile that looks clean at signup can appear on a list three months later.

Re-screen your customer base at regular intervals and surface only new matches to the compliance team. The team then reviews records that actually changed instead of rereading thousands that did not.

Keep the evidence

In an audit the question is not "did you verify?" but "show how you verified." Every verification needs its document image, liveness result, screening timestamp and decision reasoning stored with a timestamp.

That record cannot be reconstructed after the fact. Build it into the flow from the start.
